"How to promote a web site" is a huge subject. I will start with an overview, and then narrow down to the areas of more interest to this group. I can claim no expertise in this subject: I'm just a beginner.
Some reasons for wanting to have more visitors to a web site:
- To sell something -- products, services, memberships, advertising, etc.
- To provide a public service -- how to use the Internet, how to fix your computer, etc.
- To provide interactive communication on a subject -- chat rooms
- To fend off competition, or gain on competition
- To make a person well-known, such as a political candidate
- For the fun of it
